Typist, Artist, Pirate, King + Q&A with Carol Morley & Monica Dolan

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with acclaimed director Carol Morley and award winning actress Monica Dolan.

The Cinema Obsessive is proud to present a screening of Typist, Artist, Pirate, King. The film explores the life of the artist Audrey Amiss (1933-2013), who experienced mental health issues throughout her life yet channelled these hardships into her creative practice.

The story follows Audrey (Monica Dolan) and her psychiatric nurse (Kelly Macdonald) as they travel to Sunderland to exhibit her work. Along the way, they find themselves in bizarre rural situations, heated arguments with strangers and in conflict with a mysterious yet painful past.

Director Carol Morley doesn’t take the easy route when displaying Audrey's relationship with her own mental health. Morley’s approach simultaneously underlines Amiss’ daily struggles, while also showing an inner mind fuelled by wildly inventive imagination. Audrey’s journey is by no means straightforward, as the clues in her past remain psychologically complex.

The screening coincides with ‘Audrey Amiss: The Surviving Exhibitions,’ taking place at the Wellcome Collection until February 2027.

The Cinema Obsessive is a project founded by Ennis Barnett. It celebrates and platforms cinema culture in London, exploring how cinemas spaces can create and foster communities, while encouraging debate and discourse.
