New 2K restoration. The screening on 25 October will be introduced by Tom Cunliffe (UCL), who contributed video and booklet essays to Imprint Asia's release of The Cinema of King Hu Volume 1.
From wuxia master King Hu, Raining in the Mountain was made alongside Legend of the Mountain, both shot on location in South Korea. Celebrated for its elegant fusion of martial arts and Buddhist philosophy, it was selected among the Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures by the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2005.
Sandbank Temple, nestled deep in the mountains, holds a valuable manuscript written by Master Xuanzang. As the old abbot nears Nirvana, intrigue ensues. Wealthy patrons and generals gather, ostensibly to witness the selection of a new abbot, but with ulterior motives of stealing the manuscript. The story explores inner temple conflicts and external chaos. Departing from traditional storytelling, the film deftly manages factions, competition, and deception against picturesque landscapes.
