Eight Taels of Gold concludes Mabel Cheung’s celebrated 'Migration Trilogy,' extending her and longtime screenwriting partner Alex Law’s exploration of migration from departure and settlement to the question of return. While The Illegal Immigrant and An Autumn’s Tale focused on Chinese migrants in New York, this final chapter turns its gaze toward the homeland and the emotional complexities of homecoming. The film reunites Cheung and Law with Sammo Hung following Painted Faces (1988), which is closely inspired by Hung’s own experiences in Peking Opera School, and pairs him memorably with Sylvia Chang.
The story follows Ba Leung Kam (Sammo Hung), a Chinese taxi driver who returns from New York to his hometown after years abroad, only to discover that his family has moved away. Accompanied by his childhood friend Wu Tsui Po (Sylvia Chang), he embarks on a journey to find them. As the two travel together, initial friction gradually gives way to affection, yet love remains entangled with distance, obligation, and missed opportunities.
