UK Asian Film Festival presents Documentary Long Shorts

The UK Asian Film Festival, in its 28th year, celebrates powerful cinema from South Asia and its diaspora, uniting bold storytelling and diverse voices under this year’s theme, 'Stories That Bind Us'. Three distinct yet resonant documentaries come together in a single programme that explores voice, presence, and the fragile spaces we inhabit, both within and around us.

Friends of Jilipibala follows a young child in South Kolkata whose intimate bond with a sprawling tamarind tree reveals a vibrant ecosystem under threat, as the quiet rhythms of neighbourhood life are increasingly disrupted by the sounds of urban encroachment and ecological loss.

In W.R.A.P (We Really Are Pakistan), three young men in Karachi navigate the constraints of everyday labour while carving out a powerful creative identity through rap, using music as a means of resistance, self-expression, and reimagining possibility beyond imposed narratives.

Edavela_Stillness turns inward, tracing a contemplative journey through breath, emotion, and the ancient practice of mukharagam, where the space between inhale and exhale becomes a site of transformation and deep artistic awakening.

Together, these films form a layered meditation on listening, to nature, to marginalized voices, and to the self-offering a poetic reflection on resilience, creativity, and the urgent need to hold space in a rapidly changing world.
