Young Hearts (12A)

Young Hearts

The screening on 9 August will be followed by a Q&A with the director Anthony Schatteman.

When Alexander reveals that he was in love with a boy and asks Elias if he has experienced true love, that question lingers on his mind. For the first time, Elias begins to understand the depth of his feelings as he starts to fall in love with Alexander.

The Garden Cinema:

Young Hearts is a heartwarming story of teenage love in Belgium that sensitively portrays a 14-year-old boy's queer awakening.

The film's central tension emerges from the contrasting attitudes of the two protagonists: one boy totally embracing his sexuality, while the other struggling against it, paralyzed by fears of bullying and social ostracism. This dynamic reflects our current zeitgeist, where progressive acceptance of diversity coexists with old prejudices.

Despite the inevitable parallels one can draw to Lukas Dhont's Close, this presents a much more positive overview in terms of environment's acceptance and progress.
