Site&Sound is an event series that explores the relationship between architecture and film. Each session will feature curated clips and short films around a chosen theme, inviting discussion around particular elements of representation and the different techniques employed by filmmakers. Themes will examine a multitude of perspectives on architecture, as we explore a world through the lens of the built environment.
Diners, bars and kitchens are spaces where narratives can slow down and action can explode outwards. Eating a meal or having a drink is a ritual that cinema exploits for developing characters and building plots. When we see people on screen sharing a table, we know that a scene can contain an entire relationship or represent the end of one.
Social structures and power dynamics are revealed in the places where food is prepared, whether it’s family constructs or chefs exerting control in their particular fiefdoms. In contrast, the bar operates as neutral territory where strangers can become intimate, and even a little confessional, through alcohol and conversation.
This edition of Site&Sound examines how cinema transforms spaces of production and consumption into stages for character and conflict. How cooking, serving, eating and drinking all generate momentum while also revealing who people are when they're sitting still.
